FIRST CHILDREN’S CONGRESS
FIRST CHILDREN’S CONGRESS
By: Joseph Wilson O. Jayme
Last January 19, 2009, the First Children’s Congress was held in the University of San Carlos South Campus. Its theme was, “Knowing One Another, Working Together for a Better You and Me.” More than twenty private schools attended the event which was organized by the Cebu City Private Schools Administration Association, Inc. supported by the Department of Education.
A talk was given during the morning session regarding how one can be a hero by Dr. Ester Velasquez, former president of the Cebu Normal University. We were so engrossed with her sharing for it was true to life. She gave concrete examples on how one can be a hero even though we are small. We have learned that being a little hero is simply doing good turns for people who need help and acting right away on a problem if you know you can do something about it.
The students were grouped according to their field of interest such as Journalism, Music, Visual Arts, Dance, Theatre, Speech and Handicraft with an assigned color per area. In the afternoon, the students were distributed to their group wherein simultaneous seminar workshops were done. The aim of each group was to make a presentation based on what they have learned with their session. The groups competed for awards like Most Cooperative, Most Punctual, Most Organized and many more. The students were very blessed for they were aided with the best facilitators in town.
During the presentations, you can really see the effort and hardwork added with love of the students to show their talents. All the groups were given awards for their outstanding performances. The students did learn a lot. They did not only gain knowledge, but then also gained new friends.
